The roads are generally well su ced and modern, except in some mountain areas and in Akamas Peninsula. Dual lane Motorways connect the capital, Lefkosia, with the coastal towns of Lemesos, Larnaca, Agia Napa, Protaras and Pafos.

Minor roads and forest roads are still largely  unsurfaced but in good to fair condition. Appropriate care should be taken on these roads, especially during the wet weather.

Basic maps are provided within the car. More detailed maps of the island and its main cities are sold in bookshops and at local kiosks.

Drivers' Guide

To be permitted to drive in Cyprus , visitors must hold either a valid international driving license or their national driving license.

• International road traffic signs are in use, and positioned on the left-hand side of roads and highways.
• Distances and speed limits are posted in kilometers and kilometers per hour (km/h) respectively.
• The speed limit on motorways is 100 km/h with in a minimum of 65 km/h. On all other roads the speed limit is 80 km/h, unless otherwise indicated. In built-up areas the speed limit is usually 50km/h unless otherwise indicated.
• The use of both front and back seat-belts is compulsory.
• Children under the age of five must not, under any circumstances, sit in the front passenger seat.
• Children from five to ten years old may occupy the front seat only if an appropriate child's seat-belt has been fitted.
• Driving under the influence of alcohol above the prescribed limit is an offence.rfa
